On Friday 19 July, the first athletes of Team Belgium left for Paris. This honour goes to the national hockey teams, the Red Lions and the Red Panthers. Over the next few days, these two teams, along with many other Team Belgium athletes, will travel by Eurostar from Brussels-Midi to Paris.

The departing delegation will be welcomed by former sprinter Cédric Van Branteghem, CEO of the Belgian Olympic and Interfederal Committee (COIB), and by Gwendoline Cazenave, CEO of Eurostar. Olav Spahl, head of Team Belgium’s delegation to the Paris Games, will also travel to the French capital.

“Leaving for the Games is always a special moment for each athlete. We are ready to welcome them. The COIB colleagues on the ground have prepared everything down to the last detail so that they can prepare for the start of their Olympic Games in the best possible condition,” said Olav Spahl.

Cédric Van Branteghem, said, “The cooperation with Eurostar is an absolute added value for our athletes and the delegation. It will allow Team Belgium to travel at high speed from our capital to the heart of Paris. The development of the station by our partner Belfius perfectly complements the Olympic spirit. We hope that many supporters of Team Belgium will take advantage of this proximity to cheer on our athletes during the Games.”

This departure is the first in a long series of trips planned for Belgian athletes to the French capital. These trips are always organised in close collaboration with Eurostar, Team Belgium’s official transport partner for the Olympic Games. Eurostar is committed to sustainable transport in Europe. This collaboration allows the COIB to contribute to the reduction of the ecological footprint.

Eurostar trains arrive in the centre of Paris, making it easier to travel to various locations in the French capital. The athletes of Team Belgium will be travelling by Eurostar almost every day.

In addition to the athletes, many Belgian supporters will also use this mode of transport. Eurostar will run from early morning (6am) to late evening (11:45pm), allowing sports fans to cheer on their favourite teams and athletes without having to stay overnight.
